Singapore Port Container Volumes Grow in 2017
Singapore container port handled 33.7m teu last year up 8.9% on 2016, however, volumes were still marginally lower than the record year of 2014.
Retaining its place as the world's second largest container port Singapore saw an 8.9% growth in volumes in 2017, following flat growth in 2016. “Singapore put up a strong performance in 2017, MANA correspondent reported.
Our container throughput rose by 8.9% to 33.7m teu, due to the pick-up in the global economy and PSA's efforts to anchor major shipping alliances here,” said Lam Pin Min, Singapore's Senior Minister of State for Transport and Health, said at the Singapore Maritime Foundation New Year cocktail reception.
Handling 33.7m teu in 2017 volumes were slightly below the record of 33.9m teu in 2014.
Singapore is well behind the world's largest container port in volumes term – Shanghai – which according to local reports surpassed 40m teu in 2017.
Cargo tonnage handled by Singapore reached a record 626.2m tonnes in 2017 up 5.5% on the previous year.
The Lion City retained its crown as the world's top bunkering port surpassing the 50m tonnes mark for the first time with 50.6m tonnes of bunkers sold in the port in 2017 up 4.2% on the previous year.
