Port of Long Beach Gets $9.7m Zero-Emissions Equipment Grant

PORT of Long Beach has been awarded a $9.7m grant to partly finance a $13.7m project for zero-emissions cargo-moving equipment.

According to MANA, The grant, awarded by the California Energy Commission, will be used to design and construct 25 new or retrofitted electric cargo handling vehicles.
As part of the 12-month-long demonstration project, nine diesel-electric rubber tyre gantry cranes will be converted into fully-electric vehicles for the terminal run by SSA Marine.
Twelve battery-powered electric yard tractors will be procured for the terminals of International Transportation Service and Long Beach Container Terminal.
Four of Total Transportation Services' Class 8 liquefied natural gas trucks will be converted into plug-in hybrid-electric trucks that will be equipped with software to ensure they operate in zero-emissions mode around port facilities.
Port authorities expect the project to cut greenhouse gases by over 1,323 tonnes and nitrogen oxides by 27 tonnes, as well as saving more than 270,000 gallons (1m litres) of diesel fuel.
