According to MANA, Under a three-year memorandum of understanding signed between the two companies, Total will help CMA CGM vessels achieve lower sulphur emissions through three different main avenues.
Some vessels will use fuel oil with 0.5% sulphur content while those with exhaust gas cleaning systems will use 3.5% sulphur fuel oil. Total will also supply liquefied natural gas as a means of reducing sulphur emissions for those vessels capable of burning it as a fuel.
The IMO agreed on the implementation of the 2020 sulphur cap during the 70th Marine Environment Protection Committee in October 2016.
