Containership Scrapping Set for Record Year in 2017
Containership scrapping could hit a record 750,000 teu of capacity in 2017 according to analyst Alphaliner.
According to MANA, In its weekly report the analyst said that 42,000 teu of capacity had already been removed in the first three weeks of the year and 113,000 teu of ships were due to be sent for scrap in the coming weeks. This puts the market on schedule beat the record 655,000 teu of capacity scrapped in 2016, with Alphaliner estimating the figure could hit 750,000 teu this year.
Traditional panamaxes make up the majority of tonnage scrapped this year with 16 vessels of 4,000 – 5,000 teu sent for demolition.
