According to MANA, The Singapore commodity giant’s shipping arm, Raffles Shipping, is said to have order the ships at China’s Jinhai Heavy Industries.
The order is said to be for two firm 19,700-dwt IMO-II class ships with options for up to four more vessels.
The price-tag for the newbuildings was not disclosed, but Jinhai is slated to deliver the first vessel in early 2019.
The newbuildings mark Jinhai’s debut in the chemical tanker sector. To date it has only built bulkers and large crude tankers.
Wilmar last ordered new tonnage in 2013 when it booked a series of four 49,000-dwt products carriers at Hyundai Vinashin for a reported $30m each.
