According to MANA, THE Pakistan National Trade Union Federation announced three days of mourning and a strike at all ship recycling yards after an oil tanker exploded claiming the lives of 21 people and injuring many more at the Gadani ship breaking yard, on the Arabian coast of Pakistan’s Baluchistan province.
The workers were protesting unsafe working conditions and lack of government attention in enforcing safety and occupational health laws while participating in a rally on Wednesday, according to NGO Shipbreaking Platform.
The floating oil production tanker, a 1982-built 149,235 dwt vessel, Aces was sold to the Gadani shipbreaker by Jakarta-based PT Sinar Mentari Prima and was operated by PetroChina.
