India's major ports see growth

STATE-run major ports in India registered cargo traffic growth from April through June 2016 of 6.2% compared with the same period a year before.

 According to MANA,Joint secretary of major ports Prvir Krishn said the country’s major ports collectively handled 159m tonnes during their first financial quarter this year ended June 2016, versus 149.74m tonnes in the previous year.
India has 12 major ports: Jawaharlal Nehru, Kandla, Mumbai, Marmugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Ennore, VO Chidambarnar, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata.
Of these ports, Mormugao Port recorded the highest year-on-year growth in traffic of 104.5% for the same quarter. The volume jump was due to the surge in iron ore trade, which was around 3.9m tonnes in the first quarter compared with 200,000 tonnes a year ago.
