Maersk Line Orders 'green' Reefers from Carrier

MAERSK Line has ordered 100 of 200 reefers that will utilise Carrier Transicold's NaturaLINE natural-refrigerant based system.

According to MANA, the cooling system uses carbon dioxide drawn from outdoor air to help refrigerate the containers which reduces the impact on global warming as compared with traditional systems which use hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants.
Maersk intends to utilise the reefer units on closed-loop trades between Europe and the Americas and is training crew and land-based employees to be able to handle and service the new containers.
In September last year, Maersk Line said it aimed to add 14,800 refrigerated containers to its fleet in 2016 in order to push the average age of its reefer box fleet to 7.9 years, which is well below the industry average of 12 years.
The new reefers joined the 270,000 containers owned by Maersk Line and will have built-in remote container management technology, which converts each box into a digitally linked device for cargo monitoring purposes across the fleet.
