NITC VLCC and MSC boxship collide off Singapore
A VLCC and a containership have collided in the Singapore Strait, with no injuries or oil pollution reported, according to Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
According to MANA,The two ships are both Panama-flagged, with the 319,988-dwt VLCC Dream II owned by National Iranian Tanker Co (NITC) and the 14,000-teu MSC Alexandra owned by Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC).
The collision happened about 3km southeast of Singapore’s Sebarok Island.
MPA stated that prior to the accident, its Port Operations Control Centre had provided traffic information and alerted the shipmasters of Dream II and MSC Alexandra of the risk of collision.
“Dream II sustained damage to her bow whilst MSC Alexandra sustained damages on her port quarter hull. Both vessels are in stable condition and safely anchored in Singapore,” MPA said.
“MSC Alexandra reported that 10 empty containers fell overboard during the incident, four onto the deck of Dream II and the rest into the water.”
The Singapore port authority has deployed survey and salvage teams to recover the containers.
